My name is Doug Gates and I am a physical education of teacher of 26 years, in the Franklin Local School district. I am also the owner and founder of MrGym.com; an online resource dedicate to sharing information with other physical education teachers and enthusiasts. As well as the IDEA Program, which can be found at IDEAProgram.com. My newest project, in cooperation with Dirk Lincicome, is the LYFE Program. Dirk is our schools talented and gifted instructor, as well as our varsity high school football coach.
The LYFE Program has been in the building stages for quite sometime. My principal, Mr. Steve Rice, and I had discussed the idea of an after school program that would target students who may not otherwise have an opportunity to aquire fitness opportunities provided by extracurricular sports. After several years, due to personal and professional conflicts, of having this project on the backburner, the opportunity arose to pilot the program this year. Mr. Dirk Lincicome, a fifth grade teacher and our High School Football coach, approached me this year with the idea of an after school fitness program. After sharing that I had a program in the works, we decided to work together to create one consolidated after school program; The LYFE Program. The program was piloted on April 3rd, with 91 students, grades K-5, participating!
